Tips for using vitamins and supplements
When you take a prescribed medication, it comes with a warning label and usually a complete brochure explaining how to use it. It also comes with the advice of a doctor and a pharmacist, two health care professionals who are available to you if you need them. However, this is not the case with vitamins and supplements. In the case of vitamins, all you get as instructions is usually the suggested dosage on the bottle. This can be somewhat confusing, especially considering that you are taking vitamins and supplements for health reasons. So here are some tips on using vitamins and supplements that you won't find on the warning label on your vitamin bottle.
1. Always take your vitamins with any food.
Vitamins are not a meal replacement, but a meal supplement. If you take vitamins or supplements on an empty stomach, they will simply be washed out of your system. Also, do not take vitamins with fresh fruit for breakfast. The citrus acids in the fruit can change the chemical composition of the vitamin and rob it of its nutritional value.
2. Always take vitamins and supplements with water.
If it seems healthier to take them with fruit juice, you are only subjecting your vitamins to a citric acid bath, which robs them of their nutrients. Also, don't take vitamins and supplements with caffeine. The caffeine will lick the nutrients from the vitamins and they will simply be removed from your body.
3. If you forget to take your vitamins during the day, forget it.
Don't try to take the vitamins you forgot during the day before bed. This could keep you up all night. Also, don't try to "catch up" on vitamins you forgot the night before. Taking too many vitamins or higher doses is not beneficial. In fact, it can make you sick.
4. If you take a sports supplement, make sure you take it as directed.
Some sports supplements must be taken before or after a workout to be effective.
5. Make sure you are not taking vitamins that are incompatible with each other.
When you take several different vitamins at the same time, they can actually cancel each other out, making both vitamins null and void. For example, if you take too much zinc, the positive effects of the copper you are taking may be negated.
6. Be sure to store your vitamins properly.
Keep them away from direct sunlight and fluorescent lights. Too much exposure to sunlight depletes the vitamins of nutrients and makes them ineffective. Also, store supplements at the proper temperature. Vitamins that have been exposed to too much heat and cold also lose their effectiveness. Check the label. If the temperature of your refrigerator is suitable for storing the supplements you have, that is the best place to store them. Buy vitamins here.
7. Never mix vitamins in the same bottle.
They can melt into each other and possibly form unknown substances.
8. Always check the expiration date.
Vitamins and supplements have a long shelf life, but once they expire, throw them away.
9. Don't take large doses of a vitamin thinking it will have more effect.
In some cases, people take high doses of vitamin C, B-complex and E for serious illnesses, but this should be done under the supervision of a doctor. Do not try to experiment on your own to cure a serious illness with vitamins and supplements. Also, vitamins in large doses can be toxic and even fatal.
10. Do not use vitamins as a substitute for taking medication or visiting a doctor.
Vitamins and supplements are amazing healers and prevent many diseases; but if you have a serious medical problem, you should always try to see a doctor first. The medical miracles you hear about from vitamins and supplements are true in some cases, but as the labels say, "results may vary. Don't assume that your health problem is similar to someone else's or that it can be solved by taking vitamins and supplements alone.
